Report: Illinois State Rep. Tim Ozinga abruptly resigned this week; represented southwest suburbs

Illinois State Rep. Tim Ozinga abruptly resigned this week, reports the Chicago Tribune, leaving open the House of Representatives seat he held for over three years.

Ozinga (R-Mokena) was elected to the 37th District in January 2021. The district includes all or part of the southwest suburbs of Frankfort, Homer Glen, Mokena, Orland Park and Tinley Park.

According to the report, Ozinga’s office released a brief statement Monday announcing Ozinga’s resignation but did not give a reason why. According to the release, the Tribune reports, the resignation was effective at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

“It has been a privilege to serve the constituents of the 37th District,” the statement said, according to the Tribune. “As of (Monday), my service in the Illinois House will end. However, I will continue to dedicate my time and effort to make Illinois a better place.

“I remain committed to advocating for the people of my district and moving the State of Illinois in the right direction.”

According to the report, officials say Republican committeemen in the 37th District are required to pick a replacement for Ozinga within 30 days.

Ozinga ran unopposed for reelection in last month’s Republican primary.
