The Euro 2024 tournament will generate an additional tourism income of around €250 million ($270 million) for the host country of Germany, according to an economic research report.

Publishing house Funke on Saturday quoted the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research (IWH) in Halle as saying that some 650,000 fans are expected for the June 14-July 14 tournament in 10 German cities, providing the additional income.

IWH deputy president Oliver Holtemöller spoke of a "small economic plus" for Germany but added that "a major economic push is not to be expected from this."

Germany's economy is struggling, and Holtemöller said that a possible positive mood in society through the Euros could be beneficial, for instance if the German team does well and goes a long way.

"Depending on how the tournament goes, a brightening of the mood in society through inspiring sporting success would be an advantage for the economy, which is currently suffering from a rather poor mood," Holtemöller said.
