Burst pipe delays Atlanta absentee vote counting
Election results for the Georgia county that includes the vast majority of Atlanta will be delayed because a pipe burst in a room where absentee ballots were being counted, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Tuesday.
A delay in processing absentee votes in Fulton, Georgia’s largest county, will affect how quickly statewide results can be reported in a tightly contested state that could help decide the presidency.
The water leak at State Farm Arena on Tuesday delayed absentee vote counting by four hours but did not damage any ballots, the paper reported.
County election officials did not immediately return a request for comment.
Officials had hoped to count three-quarters of ballots by between 10 and 11 p.m., but the pipe burst is likely to make that impossible.
The county may not be able to fully report results until Friday, elections board member Mark Wingate told the newspaper.
