The Repair Shop has quietly become one of the best-loved programmes on British TV. Over seven years, the BBC show has restored hundreds of family heirlooms with the help of Jay Blades and his team of expert craftspeople. 12 series on, The Repair Shop is more popular than ever, with the show scooping the Daytime award at the National Television Awards in September 2023.

Almost as beloved as the show itself is the famous barn where the team get to work giving the sentimental-value items a new lease of life. But where exactly is this barn located, and can you visit where The Repair Shop is filmed? We’ve got you covered with all the details.

Where is The Repair Shop filmed?

The Repair Shop is filmed at Weald & Downland Living Museum in Chichester, West Sussex.

Most of the action on The Repair Shop takes place in the Court Barn, but some repairs are also carried out in the Victorian smithy and nearby wagon shed.

This does mean, alas, that there is no ‘real’ repair shop for regular punters. Rob Butterfield, head of factual at the production company Ricochet, confirmed this to Radio Times and said: "Many of our huge pool of experts run their own businesses, but the Weald & Downland Museum, where The Repair Shop is filmed, doesn’t offer a repair service outside the show."

While the Court Barn looks great on camera, last year frontman Jay told Great British Life that filming can get tricky during the chillier months.

"People probably don’t quite appreciate how cold it is filming in winter," he said. "We film in a listed building that was set up to store food so it’s not the warmest of venues.

"You may well notice Steve [Fletcher, clock expert] getting bigger as the series goes on because he keeps putting on layers underneath his shirt. We all have two hot water bottles each to stay warm during takes, and a vest that you plug in to heat up."

Interestingly though, the Museum doesn’t just provide a home for The Repair Shop. BBC comedy The Witchfinder, starring Daisy May Cooper and Tim Key, was filmed in Chichester, with one of the main sets located in Weald & Downland. Plus, the likes of Good Omens and Horrible Histories have also shot at this location at one point.

Outside of its starry credentials, Weald & Downland Living Museum has a collection of over 50 relocated historic houses and 15,000 artefacts, telling the story of Sussex over thousands of years.

Can you visit The Repair Shop's filming location?

The simple answer is yes! As expected, Weald & Downland Living Museum is open to the public all year round.

The admission price for adults is £15.50, with reduced costs for children, students and seniors, as well as discounted family tickets.

While the team are filming The Repair Shop, the area around Court Barn is closed to the public – but on selected dates, visitors can take a sneak peek at the production set. The show's cast and crew won’t be there on these dates, but you will be able to step into your TV screen and see where the magic happens.

The Museum says that they hope to offer one sneak peek weekend per month between March and August, while the new series is filming. Each set of dates will be released two weeks prior to that weekend, so you can check the website for updated details on when the latest opportunity will be to visit the barn.

Attending a Repair Shop open day is included in the cost of admission to the Museum, but it is suggested that you pre-book your tickets to guarantee entry, as it is likely to be busy on these days. It is an award-winning show, after all...

The Repair Shop airs on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
