House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Ted Lieu on Thursday slammed former President Donald Trump for reportedly falling asleep in his New York hush money trial and questioned his fitness to return to the Oval Office.

“I agree with the Republican from New Jersey, who said if a person cannot stand trial, he should not be president of the United States. Donald Trump has fallen asleep multiple times at his own criminal trial,” the California Democrat said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing debating holding U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress.

“I am a former prosecutor. I can tell you: that is not normal. I think there may be some physical and mental health issues that should be investigated.”

Lieu then read out reports from courtroom reporters, who said they observed the former president’s “mouth going slack,” “his head drooping onto his chest,” and “his eyes closed” during the trial.

“If Donald Trump is so weak and feeble, he cannot stay awake at his own criminal trial, he can't be president of the United States,” Lieu said.

Republicans had called the hearing to question Garland over denying their request for audio recordings from President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur in the classified documents case.
