Rep. Marilyn Lands sworn in after flipping Alabama House District 10 seat

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — For Democrat Marilyn Lands, the excitement from her win over Republican Teddy Powell to claim the Alabama House of Representatives District 10 seat hasn’t worn off.

Lands brought in 62.31% of the vote during Tuesday’s special election.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lands was sworn in at the Madison County Courthouse. Lands was all smiles as she took her oath of office and signed the paperwork.

Lands told News 19, “I’m looking forward to getting down to Montgomery and getting to work.”

She said there is a lot on her to-do list when she gets to Montgomery.

“My first priority is to repeal our no-exceptions abortion ban,” Lands said. “But many other things I want to do.”

Lands said she also wants to focus on addressing mental health issues and support education.

“I want to get us to eliminate our grocery tax,” she added.

Lands said her victory over Republican candidate Teddy Powell is a victory for Democrats and marks a shift in politics in North Alabama.

“I feel like it is the beginning of a movement for the state of Alabama, a movement forward,” she said. “I think we’re going to see a shift in the state, really begin to break that supermajority, and really achieve something that looks more like ballots in our state legislature.”

Lands thanked her supporters and said she’s eager to work for everyone in District 10, including those who didn’t vote for her.

“I want to tell everyone that I plan to be open to everyone, I want to be transparent, and I am ready to hear from you because I want to represent District 10 and this state of Alabama to the very best of my ability.”

Lands said she thinks next Tuesday will be her first day in the Legislative Session. She anticipates a formal swearing-in will take place at the start of the day.
