New renderings for Belle Meade Redevelopment project released

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — New stores, restaurants, condos, and apartments are all part of a redevelopment project in Belle Meade.

New renderings for the Belle Meade Plaza redevelopment project show how the corner of White Bridge and Harding pikes will transform. The Nashville Planning Commission approved the initial plans last May, including nearly 400 condos and apartments, 80,000 square-feet of commercial space, and 78 hotel rooms, but residents and those who frequent the area have mixed reactions to the project.

What future growth could mean for Nashville’s skyline

“I’m excited, but also I don’t want to see a lot of high rises and things like that. So if they could keep the feel that this is kind of a neighborhood still and where people in the neighborhood shop, that would be great,” said Katie Noss, who works in Belle Meade.

“I like coming here to Starbucks all the time. It’s crazy, I would like to see this all stay here and not become apartments, but that’s too bad kind of, but we’ll see what happens,” said Anthony Hamilton, who frequents the area several times a week.

Green space, public walkways, and parks will make up about 60% of the project site, according to the developer, AJ Capital Partners.

There are also limits to the plan, including the height of buildings; the westernmost building can’t go above five stories along Harding Pike. To help with possible traffic issues, another condition is that the developer has to contribute money to the Nashville Department of Transportation’s traffic calming program.

“Belle Meade used to be kind of out and sort of on its own and not by the interstates, or a lot of foot traffic or car traffic, but that’s just not the case anymore. It’s really changed,” said Noss.

The planning commission still needs to review the final plan once it gets a copy. As the project continues, those who frequent the area said it will be an adjustment.

“A lot of those places are getting torn down and new things are being built, so you got to just get used to how things are changing in Nashville,” said Hamilton.
