A man who underwent a face transplant after a suicide attempt has spoken about his remarkable transformation following reconstructive surgery.

Cam Underwood, was left with severe injuries to his face after he shot himself, yet miraculously survived.

He was left without the majority of his nose, lower jaw and teeth following his suicide attempt in June 2016.

He also suffered impaired eyesight and speech functions.

Following multiple operations, including the transplant, he has now spoken about his trauma as well as thanking the doctors who have helped put his life and face back together.

“I have a nose and a mouth again, so I’m able to smile, speak, and eat solid foods,” the 26-year-old American said.

“I also don’t get as many stares or questions from strangers.

“Even though I’m still recovering and gaining back some sensation and mobility, I’m so happy with the results.”

He added: “I’ve been able to get back to many of the activities I love, like being outdoors, playing sports, and spending time with my family. I hope to get back to work soon, too, and someday start a family.”

He is only the second person in California to undergo a face transplant and one of around 40 people worldwide.

Doctors used a 3D printer to help create a structure to align his face before surgery.

Cam had suffered from depression for years and had spoke about taking his life before the suicide attempt.

His face transplant was carried out in New York in January this year, and his recovery has been so remarkable that he was able to skydive earlier this year.

He also thanked the family of the man whose face was used in the transplant, Will Fisher, who died in New York.

“I want Sally [Will’s mother] and her family to know how much my family and I appreciate their gift and that I will always honour Will’s legacy,” he said.
