Refund issues persist following Funtime Cinemas Midstate closures

CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA (WHTM) — Moviegoers haven’t been able to get refunds for unused gift card balances after Three Central Pennsylvania Funtime Cinemas closed permanently earlier this week.

abc27 news reported earlier this week when Funtime Cinemas first announced the permanent closure of all their movie theatres, which included cinemas at:

  • Colonial Park Mall in Harrisburg

  • Kendig Square in Lancaster County

  • South York Plaza in York County

Although many people heard about the closures online, others such as Demica Smith of York County didn’t hear about the closure until they got to the front doors of the theatre with popcorn buckets in hand.

“I didn’t even look up at the sign where it says ‘thank you, closed’,” Demica Smith said. ” [I] just came here to the south York cinemas for a 12:00 movie.”

Smith expressed how she frequented the South York movie theatre enough to invest in the theatre’s refillable popcorn buckets. Now that her favorite theatre is closed, Smith said that she had to make new plans to watch her featured films.

“I gotta go see if I could try to catch the same movie today somewhere else,” Smith added.

Initially, Funtime Cinema guests were unable to request any gift card refunds on the company’s online form. The company acknowledged this problem in a recent Facebook post which read:

“We are aware of the issues with the form on our website to request gift card refunds. We should have it fixed by tomorrow afternoon.”

Now their website is instructing people interested in receiving a refund to email office@funtimecinemas.com. The company says to include your first and last name, a complete mailing address to send a refund check to, the full gift card number, and the amount that is on the gift card.

Funtime Cinemas posted signs at their theatres saying that refunds for tickets that were purchased with credit cards would happen automatically.

abc27 news also contacted The Boxoffice Company, which is a supplier listed on Funtime’s site that powers movie theater websites, to ask about the malfunctioning form.
