Referendum to keep UI Ice Arena skates by in student election

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The results are in — University of Illinois students overwhelmingly want to keep the UI Ice Arena.

University administrators were unsure of the future for the 93-year-old ice arena. So, they put three referendum questions for input on different proposals on the student Spring Election ballot.

Election results from the Illinois Student Council show 88% of students said they would be in favor of keeping and renovating the current ice arena in exchange for an increase of $13 in student fees.

In the same results, 90.1% of students disapproved of replacing the ice arena with multipurpose courts for a $5 fee per student. The student body also voted down the Campus Recreation office partnering with a community group to host an off-campus ice arena, with 68.6% of students saying no to that idea.

More than 6,350 students participated in the election. The full unofficial election results for all races can be found on Illinois Student Council’s website.

The chair of the Campus Student Election Commission told WCIA the unofficial results mean write-in votes for candidates haven’t been certified and any ties have not been resolved. Otherwise, all other results will stay the same. The chair also said it took a week to release the results to resolve any potential voting complaints and for CSEC to compile the data in one readable document.
