Reedley College mascot is getting a refresh

REEDLEY, Calif. (KSEE) – He is 65 years old and has never looked better: Clyde the mascot on display at Reedley College is getting a refresh.

“Taking off layers of paint that had accumulated over the many years and restore him to his natural beauty of polished redwood,” said Jerry Buckley, the Reedley College President.

The Clyde wooden art piece first appeared on campus in 1959. It was carved out of redwood from Hume Lake by an artist in Three Rivers.

“I’m just delighted. I’m completely delighted to see the 65-year-old magnificent piece of artwork from a wonderful artist named Carol Burnes,” said Sue Buckley.

The restoration and unveiling came just in time to be included in pictures with the proud graduates of Reedley College.

“You can see the woodgrain. You can see the cracks and crevices that are natural to the wood.  He’s got a completely different character now and he’s going to serve this campus for another 100 years,” said President Buckley.

Funding for the project comes in part from the Rotary Club in Reedley. Money well spent, according to President Buckley and his wife, Sue Buckley.

“He will be given his spa treatment of linseed oil every year that’s already set up so the maintenance he needs to continue forward and hopefully on into the next 100 years,” said Sue.
