Redskins offense struggles with consistency

The nature of the Washington Redskins offense in last night’s game against Buffalo, a 21-16 win, would best be described as rusty, inconsistent, and lacking of any real rhythm. Next week, with the starters back on the bench against Tampa Bay, won’t help an offense, especially quarterback Kirk Cousins who looked like a guy who could use some more time working it out.

Will the mass sitting of starters, especially the above mentioned Cousins do more harm than good when this team finally has to crank it up against Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks? I think it’s a fair question given the uncertainty surrounding the now franchise tagged QB whom the organization wants to see more from.

Of note, they haven’t seemed to interested this preseason to see much of him at all until last night.

Gruden seems content to just ‘flip the switch’ when the opener rolls around. His lack of urgency to build any kind of rhythm offensively showed last night. The idea that half of a football game will fix that is a fool’s paradise. If the Redskins get off to a slow start, his decision to essentially give away a preseason game when work was needed, will be fair game.

At the end of the day, Jay Gruden and the Washington Redskins had a plan for the preseason that won’t likely benefit them in 2016. Questions at running back, and defensive line weren’t solved last night or during this preseason, and Kirk Cousins did little last night to make anyone feel that the one year franchise tag audition was a bad idea.

This team is content that they can pick up from where the left off in 2015. That way of thinking may end up being a mistake.

In a division clearly up for grabs, and with so much potential on the line, the Redskins decided to rest its case on its work completed from last season. Jay Gruden might find a lot of regret in that line of thinking.
