Redskins' Meriweather appeals two-game suspension
Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather has appealed his two-game suspension by the NFL for repeat violations of the rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players, multiple sources reported Tuesday.
Meriweather, 29, was cited for two illegal hits in Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. He was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a defenseless receiver and again in the fourth quarter for a hit to the head and neck area of a defenseless receiver.
The appeal will be heard on Wednesday, according to USA Today. The Redskins face the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Meriweather's base salary this season is $1.2 million. A two-game suspension would cost him $141,176 if he loses the appeal.
Meriweather had been fined $42,000 earlier this season for a hit with his helmet during a game against the Green Bay Packers.
