Redskins lose Galette for second straight year

Junior Galette was lost for the 2016 season when the OLB tore his right Achilles one year after being lost for the same injury in 2015. As tough a loss as it is for the Washington Redskins, even tougher for Galette, depth will likely lessen the blow. But the loss of the LB will force the Redskins to look at a couple of rookies a little differently than originally planned, and maybe even take a long look at some veterans still curbside heading into training camp.

Galette, 28 years old, last played with the New Orleans Saints in 2014, where he recorded 45 tackles, 10 sacks and three forced fumbles.

The Washington Redskins signed the linebacker to a one year deal this offseason, in hopes he’d recapture some of the form he had when he registered a total of 22 sacks in 2013 and 2014.

But the Redskins, specifically Scot McCloughan, has done a solid job especially this season, to build depth on defense.

Having signed corner Josh Norman, safety David Bruton, and drafting Su’a Cravens out of USC and Kendall Fuller from Virginia Tech, allows the Redskins some options. Should they go out and sign a free agent, they’d only be adding numbers, and not necessarily a fix.

Galette was hoped to be a bookend to Ryan Kerrigan (42 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles in 2015) on the opposite edge. Look for Preston Smith to fill Galette’s spot.

Defense wasn’t going to be the primary highlight reel for the Redskins in 2016. But it is a blow Washington can roll with, but it will be a bumpy one.
