What Redskins Fans Can Expect From Bruce Allen At 2017 NFL Draft

Washington Redskins fans have no reason to worry about a Bruce Allen led 2017 NFL Draft. President Bruce Allen has gone through many drafts in his 30 plus years of NFL experience as an agent, executive positions with the Tampa Bay Bucs, Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, and the USFL.

Allen assisted then head coach Mike Shanahan in his Drafts and in 2012 was responsible for acquiring the Rams top draft pick so our Redskins could get quarterback Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris. He also urged Mike Shanahan to draft Kirk Cousins in the 4th round of the same 2012 draft. Shanahan valued the experience and opinions of Bruce Allen but Mike had the final say back then.

Allen won the George Young Executive of the Year award in 2002, the Oakland Raiders Championship, Super Bowl year. With our Redskins and having the final say in 2014 NFL Draft, he selected Tackle Morgan Moses, Center Spencer Long, Cornerback Bashaud Breeland, and Linebacker Trent Murphy who all are still on our roster. Bruce knows how to draft good players.

When General Manager Scot McCloughan joined the Washington Redskins in 2015, our scouting system was so effective and profession that Scot made no changes in it. President Bruce Allen knows everybody connected with our scouting, drafting teams. The only difference I foresee in this 2017 Draft with Bruce and previous NFL Drafts 2015, 2016 led by Scot McCloughan is Bruce will probably draft for need rather than draft the best player available regardless of position or need. I base this prediction on Allen’s own words in a CSN MID-ATLANTIC interview with J.P. Finlay. Finlay asked about Allen having “the final say.” Allen replied the “players grades” will determine the “final say” in picking the players.

Then Allen added:

“Any disagreements will be settled long before the team goes into the draft room on April 27. We have all those arguments and debates long before they set the board, so if two players end up having the same grade, we’ll have the discussions long before the draft starts, who’s going to be edged up a little bit” said Allen. “From the area scout to the position coach to the coordinator to Scott Campbell and we’ll have that decision made way before the draft.”

In other words Allen and company will have it all planned out so it will be organized and they will fill some position needs for 2017 and probably 2018 also. Allen will have 10 starting draft picks, and possibly more or less if any “trading up or trading down” with other teams occur.

Many young Washington Redskins fans today need to understand that president Bruce Allen has a special place in his heart for our Redskins, He grew up watching his Hall of Fame father George Allen head coach the Redskins for 7 successful seasons starting in 1971. He “helped” asa ball boy for the team. George Allen always said “The Future is Now.” His defense received standing ovations at RFK. Some of us old Redskins fans still think of those exciting winning games back in the 70’s. We loved the Over the Hill gang. Bruce Allen has loved the Washington Redskins since his childhood days.

When our owner Dan Snyder hired Bruce Allen as Vice President and General Manager in December 2009, he said, “Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner. Our fans know his heritage: we know his abilities. He is the right person to lead our club.” Bruce Allen has built a bond, a bridge joining ex-Redskins players, old and new fans, the military, charities, and fought long and hard in the courts to keep our almost 90 year old name, and our logo, trademarks. He is a brilliant lawyer also. He brought back the “gold pants” the winning Redskins players wore under this father George Allen back in the winning 70’s seasons. He witnessed his father and Native American chiefs approve the new helmet image worn today. George wanted to replace the Vince Lombardi helmet with the “R” on it.

Be assured my fellow Redskins fans that we are still in good hands having Bruce Allen leading our 2017 NFL Draft and Free Agency. Bruce Allen has that “Fire in the Belly” our team needs to win another Super Bowl. He believes as his famous father did that “The Future is Now.” Remember, it is not important how we started off 2017 but what is important is how we finish 2017. In my opinion, our team is only a few players away from being a championship team. We just need to allow less points scored against us on defense, stop the run better than in 2015 and 2016 and run the ball better ourselves on offense. We will have Kirk Cousins as our starting quarterback and the tallest and maybe the best receivers and tight ends in the NFL.

President Bruce Allen decided not to hire outsiders to replace Offensive Coordinator Sean McVay nor Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry. He instead promoted from inside the ranks showing he believes and has faith in our coaches and the system. The players will not have to learn a new system and new language which usually takes a year or two to learn. Time will tell but I believe these were good decisions made by Allen. It gives us consistency at head coach, assistant coaches, and at quarterback with Kirk Cousins starting and Colt McCoy as backup who knows the system now also.

I am very optimistic about our 2017 Washington Redskins and believe this 2017 NFL Draft will get us the players we need to take that next level step.
HAIL HTTR.
