Red Cross helping more than 50 residents following trio of fires in North Brunswick

NORTH BRUNSWICK – The Red Cross is assisting more than 20 families in three separate fires at the Colony Oaks apartment complex off Finnegans Lane.

More than 40 units were damaged or destroyed in the fires at buildings 2 and 16 on Petunia Drive, police said.

There were no serious injuries, and two of the fires resulted in total losses to the buildings, police said.

A fire was reported at about 7:47 p.m. Friday night at 2 Petunia Drive. A second fire was reported there at 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning, police said.

They were on opposite sides of the building and are unrelated to each other, police said.

A third fire was reported at 16 Petunia Drive at about 4:44 p.m. Saturday.

All fires are separate incidents and appear to be seemingly unrelated to each other, police said.

All three incidents are under investigation by North Brunswick detectives along with the North Brunswick Fire Marshal’s Office.

On Friday evening, the Red Cross responded to the fire at 2 Petunia Drive in which 28 people in 11 families were assisted, said Diane Concannon, communication director.

On Saturday evening, the Red Cross responded to the fire at 16 Petunia Drive where 27 people in 13 families were assisted, she said.

"We provided those families with emergency financial assistance, which could help with temporary lodging, food and clothing," Concannon said.
