Recovering addict from Milwaukee to walk 500 miles across Wisconsin to raise money for those in need

(WFRV) – It is not just a Proclaimers song; for one Wisconsin man, walking 500 miles will soon be a reality and he is doing it for a cause close to his heart.

Greg Studzinski has been battling with alcohol and drug addiction for about a decade. Not only does he want to stay sober but inspire others to do the same.

“One of the biggest things in recovery is addicts helping addicts and giving back, and that’s the only way I really knew how to do something that made an impact on other people,” Studzinski says.

In the summer of 2022, he raised nearly $20,00 for Street Angels, an organization supporting the homeless in the Milwaukee area, and at one time supported Studzinski. He raised that money by putting one foot in front of the other, walking 132 miles from Green Bay to Cudahy.

Now, Studzinski is getting ready for his next challenge: walking 500 miles from Superior to Cudahy to raise money for the United Community Center (UCC). This time though, he does not want to do it alone.

Hoping to recruit others to join him throughout the walk Studzinski says, “More people are effected by addiction than you realize. People just don’t want to talk about it, but if you see a bunch of people walking, it sparks conversation. It’s therapeutic and that’s why I want to invite as many people who want to walk.”

Even though Studzinski has his own struggles, helping others conquer there’s is something he is proud of.

“I do it for my own mental health. It helps my recovery and I don’t know how to not do stuff. I want people to have what I’m in the process of having and that’s long-term sobriety,” he says.

Studzinski will begin his journey in Superior on August 10th and finish up in Cudahy on August 31st. He hopes to raise $10,000 for UCC. To support Studzinski, click here.
