Recount gives Jefferson Twp. supervisor second nomination

Jun. 1—A recount Thursday earned Jefferson Twp. Supervisor Jason B. Hollister the Democratic nomination for reelection, too.

Hollister won the Republican nomination without opposition at the May 16 primary election. He picked up the Democratic nomination after the county Board of Elections ordered the counting of 10 previously uncounted ballots.

Hollister and Robert Kotarba tied with 47 votes for the Democratic nomination. In the recount, Hollister was named on nine of the 10 ballots and Kotarba on one, giving Hollister 56 votes and Kotarba, 48.

This means Hollister will probably face no ballot opposition for the seat in the Nov. 7 election, though potential third-party candidates have until Aug. 1 to file nominating papers to get on the ballot. That rarely happens.

Elections officials didn't initially tally the 10 ballots because voters did not blacken a circle next to the line where they can write in a name. The elections board ruled the lack of a filled-in circle shouldn't matter.

Elections officials also hosted the drawing of lots for a tied Republican nominating race for one of two Valley View School Board Region 3 seats.

Tied at 116 votes with Joseph Caprari, Laurie Marino won the drawing.

This means Marino and David R. Valvano won Republican and Democratic nominations for the seats, which represent Jessup.
