‘Reckless and irresponsible’: White House responds to Putin's new nuclear threats

New nuclear threats from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are "reckless and irresponsible," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stated during a briefing on March 13.

President Joe Biden is well-informed about Putin's latest statement, she noted.

Russia's nuclear rhetoric has been consistently irresponsible and reckless throughout the conflict, she added, specifically referencing Russia's unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine.

"We will continue to support Ukraine as they defend their people and their sovereign territory against Russian aggression," she said.

Moscow is “ready for a nuclear war from a military and technical point of view,” Russian dictator Vladimir Putin claimed in an interview with the propaganda outlet RIA Novosti, while acknowledging that this is not an inevitable scenario.

The United States is actively developing its nuclear forces and increasing their sophistication, Putin believes, but hopes that Washington is “not ready to start a nuclear war tomorrow.”

The U.S. began serious preparations for a potential Russian nuclear strike on Ukraine in late 2022, reported CNN analyst Jim Sciutto, citing high-ranking Biden administration officials.

The White House was particularly concerned about Russia deploying strategic or tactical nuclear weapons, according to these officials. The level of planning at the White House was unprecedented.

Following CNN's report, The New York Times revealed heightened concerns within the Biden administration in October 2022 about the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed these discussions as speculative and unworthy of comment on March 11.
