Recent rainfall and spike in temps call for mosquitoes

TOPEKA (KSNT) – It’s mosquito time!

The Shawnee County Health Department officials say you can expect more of them with recent rainfall and temperatures.

Shawnee County is one of the few counties in Kansas that sets traps for mosquitoes. On June 3, 2024, traps will be set up for surveillance.

The traps play a vital role in our public health efforts, helping to identify the total number of mosquitoes and the potential risk of West Nile Virus.

27 News spoke with Craig Barnes from the Shawnee County Health Department about prevention efforts. He explained how you can stay safe using the three “D’s”.

  • Dress

  • Drain

  • Deet

Is it legal to fly the American flag upside-down in Kansas?

“Dress, drain and deet,” Barnes said. “Dressing in appropriate clothing, using appropriate mosquito repellent on your clothes, and then draining wherever you can for standing water.”

Barnes also said that Shawnee County has six locations for traps that are strategically placed throughout the entire community.
