The Seattle Seahawks looked strong in their dress rehearsal game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, winning 27-17. Here’s our official preseason Week 3 recap.

Cowboys vs. Seahawks Recap

The Story:

Even though it’s only August, this game turned into a shootout between two quarterbacks with very similar skillsets. Cowboys rookie Dak Prescott has been balling out in the preseason and had a strong showing against Seattle, but he was out-shined by Russell Wilson.

Dallas’ first round pick Ezekiel Elliot had an impressive debut running behind the Cowboys’ elite offensive line. He managed 48 yards on just seven carries. Once the starters were off the field Dallas’ run game fell off, though.

Seattle got to see their own rookie running back debut in C.J. Prosise, who managed 23 yards on only four carries.

MVP: Russell Wilson

Through much of the first half it was a typically slow Seahawks kind of offense. Then, Wilson flipped the switch and wound up having a brilliant game. He completed 16 of 21 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. His final passer rating was 135.4. We got the full display of Wilson’s skillset tonight, with some scrambling and play-making ability mixed in with a few deep passes to put Seattle in scoring position.

Honorable mentions go to running back Christine Michael, who had a great second half and averaged 8.3 yards on seven carries. On defense, free safety Earl Thomas played a prototypical Earl Thomas kind of game and had a brilliant pass breakup at one point.

LVP: Nolan Frese

Seattle’s new longsnapper is not working out. For three weeks now Noal Frese’s snaps have either been high, low, or generally off the mark. Time to call Clint Gresham.

On defense, Tyvis Powell had a spectacular rookie debut against Kansas City a couple weeks ago. This game was the perhaps inevitable return down to earth. Powell was valuable on special teams but struggled in coverage and gave up a late touchdown.

As for the other side, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was injured almost immediately after the start of the game. He made an ill-advised decision to take off and was tackled from behind by Cliff Avril, which tweaked his back. Romo’s position as a starter now looks tenuous with Prescott chomping at his heels.

Key Stat: 2

That was the total number of quarterback hits that Dallas got on Seattle’s quarterbacks in the game. To be completely fair, the Cowboys pass rush is probably their biggest weak point. However, the Seahawks did a good job of keeping pressure off of Wilson and Trevone Boykin throughout the game.

Tweet of the game:

After a nice scrambling touchdown from Boykin, former Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne shared the quip of the evening:

Play of the Game:

This beautiful dime from Wilson to wide receiver Paul Richardson is the perfect embodiment of his growth as a pocket passer. Drew Brees became great by throwing his receivers open just like this. Wilson can be every bit as good.
