Recall Roundup: Ford Announces Multiple Recalls; GM to Fix Radio Software on Sonic, Spark, Trax
During the past week, a total of more than 627,000 vehicles were recalled by their manufacturers, to address various issues. The recalls affect vehicles made by Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM), Subaru, and Toyota Motor Corp., from the 2011 through 2017 model years. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.
2013-2015 Chevrolet Sonic
2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark
2013-2015 Chevrolet Trax
Number of vehicles affected: 317,572
Issue: The Bring Your Own Media radio may fail to provide an audible warning chime when the driver, after turning off the ignition and leaving the key in the cylinder, waits 10 minutes or longer to open the door. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 114: Theft Protection.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the radio software free of charge.
Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

2012 Ford Expedition

Date of manufacture: August 19, 2011 to March 9, 2012
Issue: Certain model-year 2011-2012 Ford F-150 trucks, and 2012 Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Mustang vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission that may unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of vehicle speed. An unexpected downshift into first gear can cause the vehicle to slow down suddenly without warning and the rear tires may slide or lock, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module with updated software free of charge.

Issue: Improperly welded rear suspension toe links may fracture. A fracture of the rear suspension toe link may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links free of charge.

Issue: The tires installed during assembly may have sustained damage to the inner sidewall, possibly resulting in a loss of air or a tire rupture.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires for damage and replace them as necessary, free of charge.

Issue: The load-carrying capacity modification label may not reflect the correct added weight of the installed accessories. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 110: Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars. An incorrect label may result in the vehicle being overloaded, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Southeast Toyota Distributors (SET) will notify owners and provide them a corrected label to be installed over the inaccurate label free of charge.
Timing: The recall is expected to begin June 3, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

Date of manufacture: February 29, 2016 to May 6, 2016
Issue: The steering column may have been improperly machined, and as a result, turning the steering wheel may have no effect on the direction of the wheels. The loss of steering ability would increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lot number on the steering column, replacing the steering column, as necessary, free of charge.
Timing: The recall began May 13, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 or by visiting http://www.wtd65.service-campaign.com. Until the vehicles have been inspected, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles.
