Recall issued for ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli and sold at Walmart

If you bought packaged ground beef from Walmart within the last week, you should check the label because you may need to toss it and/or seek a refund.

Cargill Meat Solutions, a Pennsylvania-based meat and poultry provider, has issued a voluntary recall for more than 16,000 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The plastic-wrapped packages of ground beef were sold to Walmart retail stores across the country.

Cargill reported the contamination to Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) after they noticed that products that had been separated had been used in the production of the ground beef, according to the FSIS.

No cases of people becoming ill or having infections from eating the ground beef have been reported to the FSIS.

The raw ground beef items were produced between April 26 and April 27, 2024 and include these types and packaging:

  • 2.25-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing "93% Lean 7% Fat All Natural Lean Ground Beef" with lot code 117 and establishment number "EST. 86P" printed on the back of the label.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age, but is most common in children under 5 years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
