‘It really is something way beyond a street-scape’: $2 million dollar Mahomet upgrade approved

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — Nearly $2 million is going towards making downtown Mahomet stand out from the rest.

The village is on a mission to revitalize its main street and Tuesday night, the board voted to get the ball rolling.

Urbana’s Mid Illinois Concrete and Excavation got a unanimous ‘yes’ vote for the $1,939,589 bid. Officials say the last time the area saw this level of upgrades was 25 years ago. Now, they hope the community can enjoy the new changes just as long.

“It’s basically going to be like a plaza area, and we’ll use it for functions, you know, because we sometimes close that block and do stuff,” said Ellen Hendrick, Village Engineer.

Hanging lights, bike racks, and a brick layout are just some of the features on the way.

“But the most important piece of the puzzle for at least from a retail and attraction standpoint, for people to come downtown to basically see businesses or other activities, we wanted to get that started here with this this project on Main Street,” said Sean Widener, Village President.

The new street scape will also make the businesses in the area more accessible with the elimination of curbs. They hope to have it ready by mid-August. Businesses will also remain open during construction.
