Frequent fliers in Bucks County will need to act soon to obtain a REAL ID as the clock is ticking toward the May 7, 2025 deadline.

Fortunately, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has made it relatively easy for travelers to apply for the all-but-mandatory identification for those who are looking for fly.

Here's everything you need to know.

What is a REAL ID, and do I actually need one?

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation lays out who will need a Real ID and why on its REAL ID website.

"REAL ID is a federal law that affects how states issue driver's licenses and ID cards if they are going to be acceptable for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic commercial flight, or entering a military installation or federal facility that requires ID," read a portion of PennDOT's Real ID website. "Beginning May 7, 2025, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID-compliant license/identification card, or another form of federally-acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board domestic commercial flights; enter a military base; and to enter a federal facility that requires ID at the door."

The deadline to obtain a Real ID is May 7, 2025. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has a website to help guide people through the process.

How do I get a REAL ID in Pennsylvania?

You should consult PennDOT's REAL ID document checklist as a first step in the process, and to understand the various required documents and forms that need to be submitted.

The next step is to apply for REAL ID online pre-verification.

"Once you have completed your REAL ID Online pre-verification application, you will receive follow-up communication from PennDOT regarding the status of your pre-verification request and whether your documents are on file with the department," read PennDOT's REAL ID website. "Please note that you are not pre-verified until you have completed the online pre-verification process and received confirmation from PennDOT that your documents are on file.

"Once your record has been marked 'verified,' you will be able to order your REAL ID online — no need to visit a driver's license center."

PennDOT released a video informing Pennsylvanians of the benefits of obtaining a REAL ID:

How do I know if I have an authentic REAL ID?

All REAL IDs will have a stamp on the right hand corner to show that the identification document meets federal standards set forth by The REAL ID Act of 2005.

The symbol stamped on your REAL ID card will vary, depending on which state you obtain your new identification card from.

Your REAL ID will have most, if not all of the information that’s included on your driver’s license.

The only difference is the seal included in the right-hand corner.
