Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer formally submitted his resignation letter to President Biden on Thursday, a day after multiple media outlets reported his decision to retire from the nation's high court.

In the letter, the 83-year-old Breyer said he will step down at the end of the court's current term, assuming his successor has been nominated and confirmed. The next term begins on Oct. 3.

Biden has pledged to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.

“I have found the work challenging and meaningful,” Breyer wrote of his nearly 28 years on the bench. “My relations with each of my colleagues have been warm and friendly.”
