Reactions: Shogo Akiyama released after two seasons with Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds announced Tuesday that they released outfielder Shogo Akiyama, who hit .224 in 366 plate appearances over parts of two seasons with the team.
The Enquirer's Bobby Nightengale reported earlier this week that Akiyama’s time with the organization likely was over after the first Japanese player in team history was informed Sunday morning he would not make the Reds' Opening Day roster.
Akiyama becomes a free agent; the Reds will owe him $8 million for the final year of his contract.

With Schrock heading to the 60-day IL and the Reds releasing Shogo Akiyama, and with the Reds expected to place Justin Dunn on the 60-day, they won’t need to make any additional 40-man roster moves before Opening Day.
They’ll need to make one more when they call up Lodolo.— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) April 5, 2022

The ultimate professional. Beloved by so many within the organization. Thank you for your character, your effort and your kindness. I wish that HR had come during last season. I hope it still arrives. And I will be just as happy for ya. Best of luck, Shogo. https://t.co/tGYJVwg57z
