RCBOE approves 1st phase of facilities master plan

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – A consultant group for Richmond County Schools is recommending consolidating and close schools in the area.

The goal is to generate more funding for programs. School leaders say not enough students are enrolled to get the funding.

Tuesday night, board members approved the recommendation for the first phase of the facilities master plan, a plan that comes with big changes.

Richmond County School Superintendent, Kenneth Bradshaw said, “We are consolidating some schools. The A. Brian Merry as well as Spirit Creek and we’re actually combining Langford and Tutt so those are the main schools that were consolidating for this upcoming school year.”

Two new schools will open for Richmond Hill and Bel Air K-8.

The public got a chance to weigh in on the plan in the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s vote.

“So we value our input from the community all of our stakeholders they give us some valuable feedback,  so we’ve taken all of that into consideration as we make a final recommendation”.

Bradshaw says the next steps would be to prepare the administrators for the upcoming school year.

“To all parties that are impacted to include our teachers first our administrators the ones that will be transferring to different locations to make sure there’s a smooth transition we want to make sure that the process goes smoothly.”

The board also voted on a recommendation to change the calendar for the school year.

“Well, we looked at our traditional calendar option and we looked at a modified year calendar option and we allowed our community to provide input and they shared that right now the traditional is the option of choice.”
