From Town & Country

Ruth Bader Ginsburg fans can breathe a sigh of relief-despite a recent health scare, the Justice is doing just fine.

We got the update courtesy of RBG documentary directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen, who called Ginsburg this morning to let her know that the film had received two Oscar nominations. Per CNN's Brian Stelter, West and Cohen said that Ginsburg "sounded strong and cheerful and said she is writing opinions and continuing to stay on top of work."

Many were worried this past December, when it was announced that the 85-year-old Supreme Court Justice had undergone surgery to remove cancerous growths in her lung. She was released the day after Christmas, and the Court announced that there "was no evidence of any remaining disease... Scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Currently, no further treatment is planned."

It was actually a stroke of bad luck that lead doctors to discover the malignant nodules in her left lung-likely saving her life. Ginsburg suffered a fall on November 7, 2018, fracturing three ribs. Tests on her ribs that subsequently revealed the cancerous growths.

"Unfortunately, lung cancer is usually caught in an advanced stage after it shows symptoms, after it has already spread to the lymph nodes and elsewhere, and by then it’s only curable in a small minority of cases," Dr. John Heymach, MD Anderson Cancer Center's chairman of thoracic, head, and neck medical oncology told NBC News.

"It’s possible, without knowing the specifics of her case, that early detection because of those broken ribs saved her life," he added.

It seems that RBG was lucky to have doctors find and quickly remove the nodules. Although, given Ruth Bader Ginsburg's track record with the disease-she's defeated both colon and pancreatic cancer in the past-perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised with her quick bounce-back.
