The 32nd annual Razzies Awards on April Fools Day recognize the Worst Achievements in Film for 2011, with comedic actor Adam Sandler in the lead, setting the record with 11 nominations in one year for the Golden Rasperry Award.
Sandler receives a worst acting nod for his role as Jack in Jack & Jill, as well as a worst actress nod for portraying Jill, his character's twin sister. His other nominations include producing and screenwriting roles.
The website Rotten Tomatoes, which scores films based on reviews, gave Jack and Jill a score of just 3 out of a 100, with one critic calling it "pitiless" and "appalling." Yet the movie has earned $74.2 million and is currently one of the top film rentals.
The Razzies, created by author John Wilson as a parody of Hollywood's award shows, particularly the Oscars, skewers Hollywood's high-profile movies, either blockbusters or busts. For the first year, the presentations of the Golden Raspberry trophies are scheduled on April 1 instead of during award season. A "raspberry" is slang for a mocking cheer.
Previous multiple "winners" have included Kevin Costner, Burt Reynolds, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kim Basinger and Jennifer Lopez for perceived "cinematic sins." The actor who has taken the most Razzies is Sylvester Stallone, with 10 trophies and 30 nominations.
This year, other contenders for the Worst Actor Award include Russell Brand for Arthur, Nicholas Cage for Drive Angry 3D (and two other films), Taylor Lautner for Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and Abduction, Nick Swardson for Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star, and Sandler again for Just Go With It costarring Jennifer Aniston.
Besides Jack and Jill, films in the Worst Picture category include New Year's Eve, Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 3D (the previous film won a Razzie), Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Bucky Larson, the story of a guy who pursues a career in porn films in Hollywood, which was produced by Sandler's Happy Madison Productions. All five films are contenders for Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Ensemble.
Previous winners Halle Berry (Catwoman) and Sandra Bullock (All About Steve) accepted their Golden Raspberry award in person. Berry's acceptance speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-7s_yeQuDg&lr=1
The Gold Derby, a website specializing in forecasting awards shows, is predicting Jack and Jill will earn a Razzie. Sandler, who has been nominated nine times before, has not announced if he will attend the show to accept if he should win.
The dishonored were chosen by 657 voters in 46 US states and 17 foreign countries and The Razzies' 600 voting members consisting of film professionals and film critics.
