Which Premier League team has the toughest Champions League group?

The Champions League groups have now been found, so how did the Premier League teams fare?

Tottenham, in particular, are up against it as the Lilywhites drew Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven.

It ought to be one heck of a contest, but Liverpool and Manchester United will be concerned by their group as well. There shouldn’t be so many concerns for Manchester City however…

So which Premier League club has the toughest path through the Champions League?

Tottenham Hotspur

Group B opponents: Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan

A mixed result for Spurs. Once they missed out Lokomotiv Moscow they were always going to draw a giant from Pot One. Barcelona have struggled somewhat in the Champions League of late, and Tottenham took four points off Real Madrid, so there shouldn’t be too much fear for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, but this will be seen as a yardstick for how far they have really progressed. Meanwhile, PSV seem one of the easier teams to beat from Pot Three but they would have rather avoided Inter (who could be a dark horse) from Pot Four, despite Inter’s poor start to the Serie A season.

Liverpool

Group C opponents: PSG, Napoli, Red Star Belgrade

Being lumped in Pot Three despite their run to Champions League final last season was always likely to make it tougher for the Reds, and so it looks to have proved. PSG haven’t totally convinced in the Champions League but they will be confident of at least making it to the playoff rounds, while Napoli could be a banana skin for Jurgen Klopp’s men. And of all the Pot Four opponents, Red Star shaped as one of the trickiest – not many of Europe’s clubs would relish an away trip to Serbia to face the 1991 European Cup winners.

Manchester City

Group F opponents: Shakhtar Donetsk, Lyon, Hoffenheim

Manchester City should be confident of winning their group for the second season in a row. They finished top of their group, ahead of Shakhtar last season and would expect to do so again, while Pot Three and Four rivals Lyon and Hoffenheim are good sides but shouldn’t hold any fear for Pep Guardiola’s men. The three-way shoot-out for the final playoff spot should be fascinating though.

Manchester United

Group H opponents: Juventus, Valencia, BSC Young Boys

A interesting group for United, headlined by the ‘Paul Pogba derby’ and the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Old Trafford when Juve come to town. Swiss champions Young Boys should be there just to make up the numbers, but United will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the result the last time they faced Spanish opposition as they prepare for a couple of tricky-looking match ups against Valencia.
