Rantoul man arrested in connection to April shooting death

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office announced that a Rantoul man is now in custody in connection to a deadly shooting last month.

Authorities determined that two Rantoul men, 24-year-old Jonalberto Guadalupe Sanchez and 32-year-old Argenis Rincon, were in an argument over a previous relationship. On April 15, the two agreed to meet on the outskirts of town, near the intersection of County Roads 3200 North and 1800 East.

This encounter led to Guadalupe Sanchez being shot in the upper torso. After the Sheriff’s Office and Rantoul Police Department arrived at the scene, Guadalupe Sanchez was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where Coroner Stephen Thuney said he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Just before 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Rincon was arrested at the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center. He was charged with murder.
