Are the Rams FINALLY Case Keenum’s team?

Short of whatever drama comes from an NFL head coach naming his starting quarterback, the decision in Los Angeles has long been settled; Case Keenum is the Rams starting quarterback for 2016. The real battle and dramatics, what have you, may come with what happens between second year quarterback Sean Mannion, and first overall draft pick Jared Goff for the backup spot.

Finally, the open and very public declaration from way back at the NFL Owners Meeting in March have finally come true for head coach Jeff Fisher and General Manager Les Snead. The guy, the veteran, that Fisher is and will be most comfortable with is in firm control of the starting gig, and the sigh of relief will be huge when he makes his announcement, again.

Frankly, I’m finally all in too. And for the record, I can’t always say that I was with Case Keenum. As a Pac-12 fan, and someone who liked Jared Goff an awful lot (I still do), he’s not ready, and I don’t know anyone who thinks he is.

Case Keenum has both looked, and performed the part.

Long gone, though not SO long ago, Keenum was labeled a “placeholder”, a word I used, to describe Keenum’s role as Jared Goff was getting ready for his role as franchise QB. Keenum has said all the right words, and been open that he wished the rookie well, that he played well, but was honest enough to say he hoped he played better.

He has.

Now, is Case Keenum the guy to get the Los Angeles Rams over the hump to .500 or better? He’ll get a shot at it. But let’s be honest; he isn’t exactly ‘franchise’ material, is he?

But you know what? He might not need to be.

“Franchise Quarterback”, whatever that means these days is changing. If you have a top five defense from front to back, and a quarterback who minimizes mistakes, doesn’t turn the ball over, and executes the game plan, are your chances that much worse that a Tom Brady led team?

Manning was a shell of his former self last year, and you still get a debate regarding his brother Eli.

Same with Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, and Andy Dalton.

Flacco won a Super Bowl, Carson and Dalton both have become playoff quarterbacks.

Outside of Brady and maybe Cam Newton, the guy who won was an aging Peyton Manning, well past his prime.

And his defense dominated Carolina.

So, Rams quarterback Case Keenum can look around and say, “why not me”.

Exactly, Case.

Why not?
