Ramona High School placed on lockdown after reports of armed individual

RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Ramona High School was placed on a temporary lockdown Thursday due to what authorities referred to as a “swatting incident.”

This is a type of criminal harassment that involves deceiving an emergency service into sending police to a location without a credible threat.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, a call came in around 1:40 p.m. reporting an individual with a firearm outside Ramona High School, located at 1401 Hanson Lane.

Deputies from the Ramona and Poway Stations arrived within minutes of the call. The department said Ramona High School and neighboring schools were placed on lockdown at that time out of precaution.

Deputies searched the campus and found nothing suspicious, authorities said. The lockdown was lifted and deputies remained on campus until the end of the school day.

Detectives from the Ramona Sheriff’s Substation will handle the follow-up investigation into the phone threat. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call detectives at (760) 738-2491.
