Rami Malek is here to rock you as Queen's Freddie Mercury in first 'Bohemian Rhapsody' teaser

A biopic about late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has been in the works for years. At various points, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw (among others) were attached to star in the project. Now, after many more stops and starts — not the least of which being the recent removal of original director Bryan Singer, who was replaced by Eddie the Eagle‘s Dexter FletcherBohemian Rhapsody is ready to rock audiences worldwide when it arrives in theaters this November with Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek in the lead role. By the looks of its first teaser, it may be one of the awards season’s most formidable releases.

Bohemian Rhapsody will cover the period between Queen’s formation to its celebrated reunion at 1985’s Live Aid. However, the above clip doesn’t provide anything like a clear narrative synopsis. Instead, it delivers a hard-charging batch of quick-hit glimpses of Malek’s singer and his bandmates onstage and in the studio, set to a musical montage of snippets of many of the group’s greatest hits. Just as clear as Queen’s musical legacy is that Malek looks the part as Mercury, exuding the sort of magnetic larger-than-life presence that made the man such an unforgettable part of the rock landscape, even after his untimely death at age 45 due to complications from AIDS.

So far, fans are excited about what could be the film to propel Malek into the Oscar race:

Co-starring Lucy Boynton, Tom Hollander, Aidan Gillen, and Mike Myers, Bohemian Rhapsody struts into theaters on Nov. 2.
