Raleigh warns simulated ‘combat medical scenarios’ could make loud sounds downtown

The city is warning people not to be alarmed if they hear loud noises in parts of downtown this week.

The Special Operations Medical Association is holding its annual conference with numerous trainings at the Raleigh Convention Center. SOMA’s Scientific Assembly provides ”a forum for military and civilian medical providers, academia, and industry from around the world to meet and exchange ideas,” according to its website.

Training and events that include simulated combat medical scenarios are scheduled throughout the week but loud noises, through amplified sound and speakers, might be heard Wednesday and Thursday, according to the city.

Sessions include how to use maggots for wound care in disaster settings, how to respond to mass casualties, medical considerations when involved in a cave rescue and revisiting tourniquet practices based on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.

The News & Observer was unable to speak with organizers Wednesday afternoon but left a message seeking more information.

There are 1,500 people registered to attend the event.
