Rainy weekend may end with severe Sunday storms

ST. LOUIS – Several rounds of rain and storms are expected through the weekend. The St. Louis area may see some severe weather on Sunday.

Rainfall potential will increase for our southwest of St. Louis this afternoon into this evening, roughly along and south of a line from Cuba to Ironton. The St. Louis metropolitan area metro looks to stay dry until after midnight.

The active pattern overspreads the entire region on Friday, with showers and thunderstorms likely. The most widespread activity is likely to be during the morning. This may produce some minor hail but severe weather is not expected. After the morning storms settle down there may be a lull or break in the storms from midday through mid-to-late afternoon.

Then attention turns to western Missouri, where isolated severe storms are likely to develop late in the day. Those isolated storms will be severe with wind, hail and tornadoes all possible. There is a chance that a couple of those storms be far west of St. Louis late in the evening, in the 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. timeframe. It remains unclear if they will remain severe when they reach our area, but it is possible.

After the storm threat passes late Friday evening, the focus for stormy weather will pull back to the west, and Saturday should be dry but warm and very windy. Wind gusts may push 40 mph. The storm threat is likely to stay out of the St. Louis area and remain in western Missouri and Kansas on Saturday.

Sunday may be our “big day” in terms of severe weather potential here in the St. Louis area. The threat of storms will advance more to the east as we go through the day. Storms are likely in the morning over central and western Missouri, but they will be slow to advance east until the afternoon. Storms are likely Sunday afternoon into Sunday night with all flavors of severe weather possible. The exact timing, location and overall intensity are still very uncertain and will be impacted by how things play out Friday and Saturday.
