Will it rain in Sacramento today? Northern California braces for more thunderstorms

Sacramento’s oscillating weather has the area stuck on gloomy skies Tuesday morning, but rest assured, forecasts are showing sunshine will return.

There’s a 20% chance of showers before 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. It’ll be mostly cloudy through the morning, with the sun peaking through as the day goes on. Highs are near 77 degrees with gusts up to 21 mph.

Chance of showers return before 11 p.m., with a low around 57 degrees and gusts up to 18 mph.

Thunderstorms were expected to develop over parts of the Sacramento Valley Monday, bringing heavy rains, wind and lightning.

Chelsea Peters, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that not a significant amount of rain fell Monday night, and much of the precipitation evaporated quickly. Based on 24-hour total observations, she said Redding received around 0.05 to 0.25 inches of rain. Mountains and foothills saw about 0.25 inches, with some places getting less.

Places that got the most rain — about an inch of rain — didn’t have observation sites, she said, so it’s hard to pinpoint the exact part of the region.

More showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday over the mountains, and northern and central parts of the valley, according to the weather service. The bulk of the storms will hit in the afternoon and evening. Chances continue through the week.

If you hear thunder or see lightning, seek shelter indoors.
