Railroad Heritage Center celebrates new additions with ribbon cutting

Mar. 28—The Railroad Heritage Center in Palestine is welcoming a new addition to its train collection with a ribbon cutting by the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce and an open house event Saturday.

A train caboose, donated to the city by Union Pacific Railroad, has been moved to the Railroad Heritage Center for visitors to explore. The Railroad Heritage Center will also receive a boxcar and a passenger car to add to its displays at a later date.

The Railroad Heritage Center was established in 2017 and opened March 30, 2018. The center is operated by the Texas State Railroad Society, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization founded by John Price and his wife, Linda Langley-Price, and the late Kaye Williams.

The center features a massive HO-style model train exhibit. The Texas State Railroad Society pursued and received the display from the family of Paul and Maria Domis of Dallas. The train model is rich in detail with miniature buildings, people and landscape. The display, combined with the wealth of other information available at the center, is truly worth a visit.

A dedication of a plaque, erected in memory of Richard Arthur Eichhorst, was held at the Railroad Heritage Center last week. Eichhorst was a railroad enthusiast with local ties.

The Railroad Heritage Center is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
