The Oakland Raiders boast one of the best offenses in the entire NFL. Much of that is thanks to the star studded cast including guys like Derek Carr, Latavius Murray, Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree and of course, one of the best offensive lines in the entire league with Donald Penn, Gabe Jackson, Rodney Hudson and the man beats that is Kelechi Osemele.

But surely at least part of the credit goes to offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, who’s creativity in play designs has enabled many of those stars to excel.

And apparently, his success in Oakland is not going unnoticed as there is already a rumor that he could be a candidate for a head coaching vacancy. No, not in the NFL, but in the NCAA at his alma matter: Oregon.

Musgrave played quarterback at Oregon and now his name has been linked to the one time NCAA powerhouse as it searches for a new head coach.

Nothing is set as of now, but the hire would make at least some sense. Oregon became known for creative powerhouse offenses under Chip Kelly but has slowly fallen off of the map since his departure. Bringing in a mind like Musgraves would appear to match the style of play that Oregon was once known for and is hoping to be known for once again.

For the Raiders, the loss would be huge. While some in the fan base may not love how he can get conservative with his playcalling at times, I am still not convinced that is all Musgrave rather than falling on the shoulders of head coach Jack Del Rio.

Plus, regardless of your thoughts on Musgrave, it’s hard to argue that the Raiders, who have been dominant on offense, would benefit from making dramatic changes to that side of the ball. A new offensive coordinator means a new scheme, new terminology and new relationships that would need to be built.

We’re still a long way from knowing if Musgrave will leave, but it’s clear that his success in Oakland is being noticed.
