Why Rachel Zoe Waited Until Her Son Was 3 to Cut His Hair
Throughout the five seasons of her Bravo reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project, the now 45-year-old celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe was open about her apprehension to have children during the height of her career. However, in 2011 she had her first son, Skyler Morrison, followed in 2013 by Kaius Jagger, and she hasn’t stopped gushing about her beautiful family ever since. But unfortunately, being in the spotlight means these adorable little boys get hit with criticism by followers and foes of their mom. Most recently, criticism over how long Zoe keeps her sons’ hair.
The two little boys constantly flood Zoe’s Instagram feed, with their bright blue eyes and gorgeous curly hair. But regardless of the happiness that the children exude, Zoe still gets “advice” on how to raise them.
Just yesterday, she posted a photo on her Instagram, celebrating 3-year-old Kaius’ first haircut.

“Big night tonight…huge,” Zoe captioned the photo of Kaius sitting in front of celebrity hairstylist Joey Maalouf, followed by the hashtag, “#thisis3.”
But while she celebrated her son’s big milestone, critics were quick to express that they felt the cut was overdue. “It’s about time,” one commenter wrote. “He looks like a girl.”
The comment was followed by others from people reacting to Kaius “finally” resembling a boy. And although it’s been a few decades since hair length had anything to do with a child’s gender, supporters of Kaius and his hair were quick to bring attention to a deeper meaning behind the cut.
“There is a holy custom not to cut a boys hair until he’s three and it signifies great strength,” one user wrote, referring to a Jewish tradition called the upsherin.
As explained by the organization Chabad, the upsherin marks a transition in a young boy’s life when he begins to learn about further religious traditions and obligations. The custom is to leave a child’s hair untouched for the first three years before celebrating the first cut with family and friends. But when she shared the photo with her over 2.6 million followers, critics involved themselves in the momentous occasion as well.
Nevertheless, Zoe’s fans have shown an outpouring of love and support for her 3-year-old during this celebratory time and are sending the family congratulations on this milestone. We are sending our congratulations too, and hoping Zoe shares an after pic of Kaius with his new ‘do.
