The Race for Baker Mayor: Air Force veteran running for mayor

BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) — Four candidates are running to become Baker’s next mayor.

The candidates include incumbent Mayor Darnell Waites, Doris Thornton-Alexander, Brenda Jackson and Denise Stevenson.

Denise Stevenson, a retired U.S. Air Force service member, is running to become the next mayor of Baker.

Stevenson said if elected, she would prioritize schools and drainage.

“You have areas that are flooding, backing up in the streets. So, we fix those initially, and then that fix will lead you to another fix, and then so forth until the water is running adequately out of the city,” said Stevenson. “I don’t find it to be a difficult problem, quite labor intensive, but we can do it if we get after it.”

Stevenson believes students should have the adequate training to go into the workforce. She suggests professionals help school administrators to develop training for students.

Voters have told Stevenson that the Baker community needs change.

“Overall, the city wants change for the good. They want someone that’s going to do the right thing in the office for the people,” she said.

Election day for the Baker mayoral race is March 23. Early voting began on Saturday, March 9, and continues through March 16, except for Sunday.
