For millions of kids in the 1990s and early 2000s, Nickelodeon was a household staple. However, a new documentary has been making headlines for exposing a darker side of the children's television network.

"Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" shines a new light on some of the most popular children's shows of Nickelodeon, exploring allegations of abuse and toxic behavior behind the scenes on shows like "Drake & Josh," "The Amanda Show" and "iCarly."

Behind all these hit shows created for the Nickelodeon network was prolific TV producer Dan Schneider, which the documentary spends a lot of time focusing on. Schneider has come under fire over the years for his behavior and the environment on the sets of his shows.

What are the allegations explored in 'Quiet on Set' documentary?

"Quiet on Set" seeks to feature the voices of some former Nickelodeon actors and employees who claim they worked in a toxic workplace for shows Schneider created. The documentary was inspired by investigative reporting by Kate Taylor of Business Insider.

Schneider worked with the network from 1994 until he parted ways in 2018. The documentary alleges Schneider and other higher-ups at Nickelodeon promoted a harmful work culture, as well as crossing the live with off-color jokes and suggestive gags on his shows.

Some of these victims who have not spoken publicly before included Drake Bell, who recently revealed the alleged sexual abuse he claims he suffered at the hands of former Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck, USA TODAY reported.

  • Drake Bell of "Drake & Josh," "The Amanda Show" - Drake Bell is set to appear in the third installment of the series. He has been making headlines lately for allegations of sexual abuse by former Nickelodeon dialogue coach Brian Peck. Peck was arrested in August 2003 and convicted in 2004 on charges of lewd acts with a child that stemmed from a 2001 incident. Bell had not previously disclosed himself as the plaintiff in the 2004 case.

  • Alexa Nikolas of "Zoe 101" - Nikolas has already been very vocal about her experiences at Nickelodeon, appearing on social media, on podcasts and giving interviews to reporters. Nikolas has consistently alleged extensive bullying and a toxic work environment on the set of "Zoe 101." She left the show and Nickelodeon after the second season wrapped.

  •  Giovonnie Samuels, Kyle Sullivan, Bryan Hearne and Katrina Johnson of "All That" - All prominent members of the "All That" cast, Samuels, Sullivan, Hearne and Johnson are also speaking publicly for the first time about their experiences at Nickelodeon. According to a press release from ID, Summers will speak alongside other adult cast members and even parents who "attempted to advocate for their children on these sets."

In addition to child stars, the documentary interviews several producers, writers and other behind-the-scenes workers from their hit shows.

Kids from the '90s and longtime Florida residents might remember the network used to film some of their hot shows in Orlando. Nickelodeon joined the Universal Studios Florida team in 1988 to make its first production studios.

As of 2024, there have not been any announcement for any new attractions or shows to be housed inside the building.

'It hurts really bad,' Dan Schneider speaks out against documentary

Dan Schneider broke his silence in a 19-minute interview following the release of the documentary.

“Watching over the past two nights was very difficult … me facing my past behaviors, some of which are embarrassing and that I regret. I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology,” Schneider told interviewer BooG!E, who played T-Bo on iCarly.

He addressed specific allegations and stories of abuse, specifically the ones Bell brought forward in his parts of the show. Schneider said he did not hire the Nickelodeon dialogue coach who was convicted of sexually assaulting Bell in 2004, which was then unknown.

“When Drake and I talked and he told me about what happened, I was more devastated by that than anything that ever happened to me in my career thus far. And I told him, ‘I’m here for you,'” Schneider said in the video.

He also discussed the seemingly inappropriate jokes made on the kid's programs, saying in hindsight he should've not crossed the line.
