A quick stop at Kroger for soda turns into a big lottery payday for one Kentucky woman

A Louisville woman won big Tuesday after she stopped in at Kroger on Bardstown Road for some soda, and on a whim, purchased two Kentucky Lottery Double Doubler scratch-off tickets.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, didn’t scratch off her tickets until she got home, and that’s when she got a big shock.

“I saw I matched my first number and assumed it was $5, but I saw $6,000 and couldn’t believe it,” the woman told Kentucky Lottery officials, a news release issued Thursday said.

Her luck didn’t fail: Every number the woman scratched was a winner, and soon she had racked up $12,000.

“I got my phone out and calculated everything,” the woman said. “It was $180,000!”

Then the woman turned the ticket over for the bonus game. She won that as well, bringing her total winnings to $225,000. The woman’s son and daughter were equally surprised.

The odds of winning any prize on the Double Doubler scratch-off game are 1 in 3.48, according to the lottery, though most prize range from $10 to $100.

The woman came to Kentucky Lottery headquarters Wednesday to claim her prize, a requirement for lottery winners. The woman said she plans to travel and pay some bills with her winnings.

After taxes, she took home $160,875. The Kroger which sold the winning ticket will get a $2,250 bonus.
