Queen Elizabeth II Might Have Sent a Message to Donald Trump With Her Brooch

Her brooch game is STRONG.

On July 13, President Trump arrived in London for a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and, while the country pulled out all the stops when it came to their massive protests of our current government, Queen Elizabeth remained mum on the issue—or did she? Though it’s policy that the royal family is meant to remain separate from politics, not speaking out for-or-against any issues or political figures, reports have surfaced that suggest that the Queen might have silently protested Trump’s election. And, if true, she did so in the BEST way ever. Through fashion, of course.

While the Queen is well known for her rainbow of coats and matching hats, she’s also known for her massive collection of brooches. Each is not only significant in terms of its origin (many are gifts from family, friends, and world figures), but also significant in terms of the message she is sending on the particular event it is worn. So, while the below is only speculation, it’s hard not to allow your jaw to drop and a smile to appear on your face when reading the below, first outlined by Twitter user @SamuraiKnitter.

The Queen and President Trump only met with one another once, but she was photographed all three days of his stay in London and made sure to make use of her exquisite and historical jewelry collection while he was in town. On the first day of his arrival, though the two did not see one another, Queen Elizabeth chose a brooch that was a personal gift from the Obama family. It was paid for with their own money, as opposed to United States Funds. Many people, of course, assumed that her wearing it on this particular occasion was a subtle show of loyalty for Trump’s predecessor and—in the biggest understatement of the century—a man who Trump isn’t exactly a fan of (though Obama’s feeling seems very much mutual).

For the duo’s initial meeting on day two of his visit, Queen Elizabeth chose a yellow and blue floral dress that peeked out from underneath a bright blue paisley brocade coat. On her head was, of course, a hat to match. Around her neck was a strand of pearls and on her chest was a brooch that she had inherited from her mother. It wasn’t just any brooch, though; in fact, it was the very brooch that her mother famously wore to her father’s funeral.

The Queen’s brooch game didn’t end there, however, as she chose the Sapphire Jubilee brooch for the last day of Trump’s visit. This particular piece of jewelry was gifted to her by Canada, which is a country that Trump is currently risking a trade war with. Again, it seems as though the Queen put her jewelry where her mouth was in terms of aligning herself with one country over another in terms of ongoing disputes. Though none of the Queen’s fashion choices have been commented on by the family itself (nor do we expect it will), we’re definitely honoring her ability to use fashion to send silent statements as supreme.
