It was announced last month that the Queen will open up Buckingham Palace's garden for the public to use for summer picnics.

However, it is understood that Her Majesty will herself soon be out of town and resident at her Scotland home, Balmoral.

Fortunately for the 95-year-old monarch, the castle's gardens are looking just as picturesque as at Buckingham Palace.

In an official photo shared on Twitter, the estate currently boasts a freshly-cut lawn and blooming daffodils.

The sunny image of the royal residence – where the Queen retreats to every year from August to October – was captioned: "A fine day at Balmoral."

Social media users described the scene as "beautiful" and "fabulous", as they left more than 900 'likes'.

According to the Daily Mail, the monarch is set to travel up to the castle later this month – weeks earlier than usual – as she continues to grieve for her late husband, Prince Philip.

However, because public access to the residence remains until August, it is reported that she will be staying on a private part of the estate, in the seven-bedroom Craigowan Lodge.

Balmoral is a special place for the Queen, who celebrated part of her 1947 honeymoon with the Duke of Edinburgh there, when they stayed at the Birkhall hunting lodge.

Last year, she spent her final stay on the estate with him, before the couple travelled to their Norfolk home, Sandringham, for two weeks, and then on to Windsor Castle – where he passed away, aged 99, early last month.

The formal gardens at Balmoral, which feature Victorian glasshouses and a conservatory, cover three acres, but the whole estate covers 50,000 acres.

In March, the Queen gave an insight into her impressive garden at her London residence.

An Instagram post, shared to celebrate the first day of spring, a carousel of pictures showed Her Majesty's rather extensive Buckingham Palace back yard in full bloom.

The images were accompanied by a caption that read: "The garden at The Queen’s London residence sees much change over the course of a year.

"Despite its urban location, the garden is home to a remarkable array of flora and fauna."

The palace grounds span around 42 acres and feature a large lake and wildflower meadows.
