QC teen wins Iowa DAR volunteer award

On Friday, April 5th, 2024, Iowa Society Daughters of the American Revolution will award its Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award to Abigail Johnson of Blue Grass.

The award is presented to a youth between the ages of 14-21 in recognition of outstanding or unusual care given to veterans, according to a Tuesday release. The candidate for the award also serves as a role model for peers and consistently demonstrates the qualities of leadership.

Johnson, 16, serves veterans through hundreds of hours of yearly community service and created the non-profit Veterans Tech Support — which provides technology education and assistance for veterans and their families. She was also the State President for Iowa Society Children of the American Revolution in 2023-24.

She serves in leadership roles in her school community, is a member of many service organizations, and participates in sports, and other activities. Iowa Daughters of the American Revolution are proud to bestow this honor on her and wish her the best of luck at the regional and national levels of the contest, the release said.

The national level of this award will be presented at the National Daughters of the
American Revolution Continental Congress, June 26-30, 2024, in Washington, D.C.

Johnson was named the 2022-2023 American Legion Auxiliary National Junior Member of the Year and was honored at the American Legion Auxiliary National Convention held in Charlotte, N.C. on Aug. 28, 2023.

One of the largest patriotic women’s service organizations in the world, DAR has 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters across the country and several foreign countries. DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service and more.
