Qatar Airways to resume Yangon flights

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Qatar Airways will resume flying to Myanmar's biggest city in the latest indicator of international interest in the Southeast Asian nation as it boosts its welcome to investors and tourism.

The airline said in a statement Wednesday that it will relaunch its Doha-Yangon route that had been suspended in January 2008. It said the thrice-weekly flights will resume this Friday.

Taiwan's EVA Airways recently announced it will begin Yangon-Bangkok-Taipei flights on Oct. 19.

Deputy Director of Civil Aviation Nweni Win Kyaw told The Associated Press several other airlines have recently announced direct flights to Yangon, including Korean Air, Japan's ANA and Germany's Condor. Thirteen international airlines currently fly to Myanmar.

Korean Air resumed flights in September and ANA will resume its Narita-Yangon flights in mid-October.
