Putin’s spokesperson clarifies dictator’s comments on proposal to exchange Navalny

There were no actual negotiations regarding the possible exchange of opposition figure Alexey Navalny before he died in prison, Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, said, commenting on remarks by the Russian dictator regarding such a possibility.

It was only an idea, and actual negotiations never took place, Peskov said.

"I would like to highlight two key points. First, President Putin did not confirm in yesterday's remarks that any negotiations regarding Navalny had taken place. He talked about an idea put forward by one of the individuals about the potential exchange of Navalny.”

“He informed that person of his tentative agreement. Putin did not mention that negotiations took place on this matter," he emphasized to Russian propagandists.

Peskov did not specify who exactly proposed Putin to exchange Navalny for someone from among the Russian citizens serving prison sentences in the West.

The death of the 47-year-old Russian opposition figure was announced on February 16, 2024.

The Russian authorities had long refused to release his body to his mother in an attempt to blackmail her into refraining from holding a public farewell, but their tactic failed.

Navalny was buried on March 1 at the Borisovskoye Cemetery in Moscow.

Russian law enforcement officers detained over 100 people during the farewell ceremony.
