New Jersey Rep. Mickey Sherrill criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for saying it wouldn’t be “appropriate” to go to Ukraine, noting that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin “simply doesn’t want him to,” The Hill reported on April 12.

“Donald Trump doesn’t care what’s best for U.S. national security or democracy — he only cares what’s best for Donald Trump,” she said, arguing that Trump is too cowardly to visit the war-torn country.

“His cowardice in the face of protecting democracy or standing up to dictators is well known, so it’s unsurprising that, unlike Joe Biden, he’s too cowardly to go into a war zone. Trump’s dangerous and chaotic behavior, affection for dictators over our allies, and well-established disrespect for democracy makes Americans less safe.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly invited Trump to visit Ukraine three times previously: in June 2023, as well as in January and February 2024. He urged Trump to visit Kyiv again in this week's interview with Axel Springer media outlets.

Trump believes it would be inappropriate for him to visit Ukraine now because he is not in office, Reuters reported on April 10, citing the Republican presidential candidate's campaign.

"There's been no outreach from Zelenskyy, and President Trump has said publicly it wouldn't be appropriate for him to go to Ukraine right now since he's not Commander in Chief."

On April 9, Zelenskyy rejected the idea, backed by Trump and his allies, that Ukraine could quickly end the full-scale Russian invasion by making large-scale territorial concessions.

Donald Trump on Russia’s war against Ukraine

Former U.S. President Donald Trump promised to quickly end the war in Ukraine if he wins the upcoming 2024 U.s. presidential election, during a speech made on Jan. 16.

“I know President Putin very well. I know Zelenskyy very well,” said Trump.

“We’re going to get it solved very quickly.”

Trump repeatedly claimed that he would “achieve” an end to Russia's war against Ukraine within 24 hours if re-elected. He also said he “would have allowed” Russia to capture part of Ukraine and that the U.S. is sending too much weaponry to Ukraine.

Trump stated that Putin supposedly “wanted peace” but now “will probably get everything” in March 2022. The former U.S. President also called the Russian dictator “a very smart person.”

Trump's plan to end Russia's war against Ukraine is for Ukraine to give up Crimea and Donbas to Russia, the Washington Post reported on April 7.
